West African griots are known locally as gewel, gawlo, dieli, djeli, jali, jeli, mbao and others. The term 'griot' is a complex one with multiple meanings. griots known as verbal artist, or 'master of word' the griot has also been variously described as oral historian, storyteller, genealogist, advisor, spokesperson, praise-singer, and professional musician. The griot has always been thought of first and foremost for his oratorical skills as singer, praiser, and keeper of oral history. But griots are closer to historians than to soap operas or musician. West African griots are walking a tight-rope between propaganda and criticism. Furthermore, there is an intricate relationship between those who control power, and their continued legitimisation through political oratory produced by the poet. Griots were, and still are, observer, commentator or councillor on the past and passing scenes. He happilly still survives in some parts of Africa, not only rehandling traditional material... keeping the heroic feats of historical figures alive, but also commenting in traditional style on contemporary matters,
