This article compares the Griot in Western Africa and Imbogi in Southern Africa in tenus of the political, social and religious similarities and differences and examines how they have maintained and developed their field with continuity.
Both the Griot and Imbogi have acted the leading role to express the society, politics, religion and history. However, Imbogi has the special responsibility to keep the balance of political power and read public opinion while Griot has so important function to take care of the history keeping information, royal and noble family history, cultural events that it does the guidance of the past and future.
It is true that the content of the performance has been carefully chosen to meet politicians' request. However, they have carried out the important role of socio-political orators in spite of political pressure. It can be argumentative but contemporary Griot and Imbogi focus on praising whereas previous ones focused on the historical facts and family history. The research illustrates that they have contributed to create and keep their group identity and to cooperate the rationality of govemment criticizing their controllers after they collected public opinion.
Griot and Imbogi are still praisers, critics, educators, mediators and political commentators and the role of them has been the same over the history.
