Coetzee's fifth novel 'Foe' is very controversial in various themes like race, gender and social class. In this article we follow the traditional method of analysis which divides the given text into form and content. The written literary text belongs to linguistic data like words or sentences. What differentiate the poetic text from other forms of daily communicative discourse one lies in its function, which Roman Jakobson once called 'the poetic function' oflanguage. Due to the length of the given text, namely the novel 'Foe', we choose arbitrarily some parts of the prose, which, however, are highly relevant to the post-colonial topics including other miscellaneous messages. These are occurring repeatedly in the other novels of Coetzee which can be rendered as 'master & servant relationship, center vs. periphery, culture vs. barbarism, speech vs. silence, or speech vs. writing.
In this article we have implied that the author have expressed successfully the possibility of avoiding the traditional western binary dichotomy in fmding a 'truth', which can never be mediated by linguistic expressions. To overcome this dilemma he introduces various kinds of formal devices, like that of setting specific characters, Cruso, Susan, Friday, Foe, and of differentiating the perspectives and genres. Empty space, black hole, which are ascribed traditionally as negative, are here newly fore-grounded as undescribable objects related only to the non-European, namely the black African Friday's world. All this however should be mediated by language on which the writers like Foe and Susan relied. Concerning the topic of writing the poetic text, there seem to be needed some kinds of unintentional blessing of God, or super-natural power, not individual intentions or talent, Coetzee implied.
