Since the European powers advanced to East Africa, western culture has permeated into the region. Europeans started to transcribe the Swahili language in the Roman script for their missionary efforts and administrative needs. In this process the Western literary tradition was introduced to African writers. As a result a good number of literary works written in Swahili was published in East Africa.
The objective of this study is to elucidate the role of language policy in developing modem literature written in Swahili in Tanzania. The spread of Swahili during the colonial period and the outset of independence is one of the determining factors of the growth of Swahili literature in Tanzania.
The Germans carried out a language policy designed to favour the use Swahili in Tanganyika. The standardization of Swahili was realized by the British colonial administration that gained control over the three East African countries after the Second World War. The newly independent Tanzanian government encouraged the use of Swahili for national unity. A series of measures contributing to the spread of Swahili played a crucial part in the growth of Swahili literature in Tanzania.
