The emergence of Swahili fictional prose in the second half of the twentieth century cannot be appreciated unless the influence of the Swahili oral narrative tradition is studied. It is critical to discuss the role of the oral tradition as a model in relation to the creation of written literature. Thus, the research into the transition from the oral to the written literatures enriches our understanding of the beginning of Swahili fictional prose.
The objective of this article is to demonstrate the influence of Swahili oral narratives in the early Swahili fictional prose in terms of the theme of youngsters' maturation. The theme which has been expressed in many Swahili oral narratives is often found in early works of Swahili fictional prose. In the oral narratives which deal with the hero's transition from youth to adulthood, his journey is important in this process. Heroes in the stories follow a similar pattern: they set out on a quest, succeed and return home. The pattern is observed in two of the written works considered here. In their maturation, the heroes must prove their capability to overcome difficulties. They have qualities to achieve successful transition, and their qualities are made explicit in the works. The way in which the qualities are highlighted in the written works is also similar to that of the oral narratives. The use of polarity play an essential role in expressing the qualities.
