The Cruel City is Mongo Beti's first novel, published in 1954 under the name of Eza Boto. The story is centered around Banda's hardship in a cruel city over the course of three days. His downfall begins when he loses all the cacao he sells for living.
Although Banda loses all his cacao, he finally overcomes this hardship which signifies his resistance to and triumph over white rulers' exploitation of the African continent. The power imbalance in African nations is explicated in loss when the city of Tanga, divided into two parts, north and south, breaks down into conflict. Here we see the conflict and spilt within African society.
This novel, however, does not descend into a predictable pessimism. Rather, Banda's decision to leave Tanga announces new hope and his journey outward can be interpreted as a project of possibility for dissolving conflict among African peoples. In addition, Beti insists that the African peoples of the African continent, browbeaten by white Western colonists, must become aware of their situation and resist white hegemony.
Beti's novel, The Cruel City, provides us with a critical understanding of the social and political construction of Africa and African Literature as Beti uncovers the dark side of Africa under white colonial rule.
