Oral narratives are realized through actual performances, There is no fixed text in oral narrative performances because performers of oral narratives not just transmit stories, but create their works by using traditional images and formulaic expressions in performances, In performances oral performers incorporate their body, face, voice and immediate environment in the creation of meaning.
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the dynamic aspects of oral narrative performances, This study examines the thematic change made by performers in two oral narratives which share an identical image. In 'Sultan Majinun'(Sultani Majinuni) collected by E. Steere in the second half of 19th century and 'The Cat of King'(Paka wa Mfalme) performed by Amira Msellem Said in 2006, an image of an ogre which used to be Sultan's beloved cat is observed. While the theme of maturation of youngster is stressed in 'Sultan Majinun,' the performer of 'The Cat of King' emphasizes the theme of unjust ruler in the performance.
The meaning of a oral narrative cannot be properly examined without studying its performance, It is individual performers who develop the themes of their stories using artistic techniques in actual performances.
