This article presents the results of a pan-Francophone African opinion survey carried out by our research team. This survey aims to identify the attitudes of a sample of 22 French-speaking African countries citizens regarding Democracy, Economic recovery and Development.
The survey showed us that across French-speaking African countries the majority of respondents are dissatisfied with the current performance of their democracies, economies and general national development. However, we discovered that popular satisfaction with development varies greatly between countries. Survey results show that respondents from a few countries such as Mauritius and Mali -where democratization and economic reform are strongly installed- are much more satisfied with general development than those from other countries. On the other hand, respondents from countries like Congo(kinshasa), Cameroon and Chad-where dictatorship, endemic corruption and poor pace of economic reform prevail, are clearly the most dissatisfied group. Also, the majority of respondents regard corruption as the primary obstacle to development facing their countries. The above results suggest that Francophone-African countries need to make greater efforts to accomplish three priorities for national development, namely, Democratization, Good Governance and Economic reforms.
Furthermore, we found that more than half of the people surveyed are dissatisfied with the market-based economic reforms recommended by the International Monetary Fund(IMF) and the World Bank. However, the majority of respondents identified that the main causes of their country's current economic crisis are not the policies of the IMF, but their own inherent national problems, such as political instability, corruption and economic mismanagement by their political leaders. We therefore conclude that all Francophone-African countries must implement market reform to enable a sustained economic recovery.
Finally, we found that almost all African respondents support regional economic integration between African countries: nearly 90% of respondents think that regional integration could play a positive role for the economic development of their respective countries. This regional integration could serve to enhance cooperation, internal trade and stimulate sustained economic growth within the African continent.
