A number of Regional Economic Communities(RECs) have been formed across the African continent, particularly since the 1 960s. Currently, there are at least 14 regional economic groupings in Africa. However, the experience of regional integration in Africa has failed to achieve its objectives of increasing intra-regional trade in particular and fostering policy coordination among member countries.
This study analyses economic, political and institutional obstacles to the developments of RECs in Africa, and also examines the possibility of the vitalization for regional integration in Africa. In particular, we focus on the problems and prospects of UEMOA (I'Union Economique et Monetaire Ouest-Africaine), as a case study.
The results show that UEMOA's progress in economic integration will depend critically on expanding intra-regional trade, integrating with the global economy, improving transportation infrastructure, removing trade barriers, integrating with subregional neighboring bloc, namely ECOW AS(Economic Community of Western Africa States), as well as eliminating political tensions within the region.
