The Gwangju uprising on May 18, 1980 showed the reason why democracy and human rights must be respected. It displayed how government repression affected the lives of the people in SouthKorea. This study reconstructs the development of the May 18 uprising through civilian sacrifices during the struggle in Gwangju.
The May 18 uprising broke out in response to the illegal seizure of political power by Chun Doo Hwan's military regime. Martial law troops, consisting of airborne soldiers, were dispatched to suppress demonstrations during the early stage of the struggle in Gwangju city. The troops killed a deaf-and-dumb civilian and repressed the Gwangju citizens' protests brutally. Because of the extreme atrocities during martial law, the angry Gwangju populace overcame their fear and resisted with stones and Molotov cocktails.
As the citizens' resistance became stronger the martial law troops fired on them, which increased the number of civilian victims. Many civilians were killed or injured as the martial law troops that were blocking Gwangju city fired indiscriminately at citizens and vehicles. The troops were forced to retreat for a time out of Gwangju city.
The martial law troops repressed the 'citizen militias' who resisted when the troops reentered Gwangju city on May 27, 1980 in an operation called 'Sangmu Choongjeong'. Many citizens were sacrificed by the cruel repression.
