This paper discusses the Choi’ Family Murder during the 5~18 May 1980 Gwangju Uprising in Korea. The father, stepmother and stepbrother of the Choi family were killed on May 26, 1980, and the murderer is supposed to have been the family son. The tragedy provides information on the lives of people who lived though a turbulenttime in Korea’s history, from the Korean War beginning in 1950 to the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. The father, Choi Deuk Chun, was a left-wing activist since liberation from Japanese colonization; the son, Choi Chul, was a militant in the civil army during the uprising. This study is based on the oral testimony of those involved, and records the lives of Choi Deuk Chun and Choi Chul, and the conflict between them. The oral testimony also allows for a re-evaluation of the historical significance of the Gwangju Uprising.
