While Surangama-sutra was accepted in terms of E-ken-won-tong disciplines before Chosun dynasty, it was interpreted, in Chosun Dynasty, from the perspective of sung-myung-ssang-su(性命雙修), a Taoism nae-dan-hak(內丹學) principle. It was Gae-wun(開雲大星), a buddhist monk of Bong-am-sa(聞慶 鳳巖寺), who annotated Surangama-sutra in terms of sung-myung-ssang-su. He concluded in Jeong-bon Surangama-sutra(正本楞嚴經) that the discipline of Surangama-sutra was sung-myung-ssang-su. First, he interpreted sammaji(三摩地) of Buddhism as Il-kyu(一竅). Il-kyu commonly refers to the lower central point of abdomen. (refers to the point under the navel) Gae-wun insisted that training sammaji means to seek for Il-kyu. This corresponds to the teachings of Taoistic nae-danhak. The second point of Gae-wuns argument is sungip-myunggung(性入命宮), which follows Il-kyu(一竅). Occurs internally after Il-kyu is found/ is the inner mechanism after Il-kyu is found. Sungip-myunggung refers to gamri-gyogu(坎離交) of nae-dan-hak. Gamri-gyogu indicates the combination of the two energy of the fire(火) and the water(水). When the practice reaches a certain level(point) after sungip-myunggung is accomplished, various supernatural(occult) powers occur, by which Gae-wun explains Yuga-suryun(瑜伽修鍊證驗說).
According to Yuga-suryun, the results of the disciplines come in four stages: sudawongwa(須陀洹果), sadahamgwa(斯陀含果), anahamgwa (阿那含果) and arahangwa(阿羅漢果). In the stage of sudawongwa, semen dries up and will never be produced. In anahamgwa, scars and wrinkles disappear. The blood turns into white and one can write on the rock with ones fist in anahamgwa. Lastly, the golden rays encircles the body in arahangwa. These are the experiences of Sung-myung-ssang-su, and Jeong-bon Surangama-sutra was the first to describe these stages of experiences. Gae-wun was critical to Gan-wha-sun(看話禪) through Wha-du(話頭). He criticized spiritually awakening(Attaining higher perception) through Gan-wha-sun saying that it was as vain as a fool obtains gold in his/her dream. In other words, it was impossible to reach such a state of spiritually awakened through the disciplines of Gan-wha-sun. He clearly drew the line from Gan-wha-sun.
