In this study, the cinematic translation of the Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee, will be examined. This film is one of the most critically acclaimed film adaptations of Jane Austen's fiction This study will attempt to find out how the newly translated text revokes the hidden layers of meaning and will also examine how the subversive criticism of patriarchy found in Austen’s written text is transposed onto the film.
A film adaptation of a novel, even though is a cinematic translation of a literary source should be judged and appreciated in its own right. The combination of elements from the original text, the point of view of the director, and the masterful use of the tools of the cinema, camera work, sound, editing, and so on, all combine to create the final product that can be enjoyed on its own.
The cinematic translation of a novel need not be seen uniquely as a question of “fidelity” to the source material. It is a matter of the filmmaker creating an independent, though related work of art. Examining a literary text and its subsequent adaptation may enlighten us to as how a literary text achieves further significance in new forms and contexts and uncovers new meanings long after its actual conception.
Cinematic translations provide a unique tool for envisioning the critical potential of literature. The analysis of film adaptations can highlight the elements that had remained embedded within the source text. Thus, this process can further stimulate and renew our understanding of the written text and ascertain the connections between the culture which formed the source text and the various cultures that have appropriated it in later periods.
