Geoyeolkuk is the name of a State which was present at Ancient Geo-chang region. But there has been little konwledge about when it was present, what its inner organization was and how its political characteristic was, even if it has been regarded to be a part of Kaya(加耶). Thus this article will illuminate the formation and the changes of Geoyeolkuk by refering to the archaeological inqueries and studies of Geochang region and using the related materials found in Samkukgi(三國志), Samkuksaki(三國史記) and Ilbonseoki(日本書紀), etc.
To begin with, this study reflects the formative times and name of it on the premise that a Sokuk(小國; The small state) was present at Geo-chang region in view of the distribution situation of archaeological mate-rials. As for the name, it is more likely to be Gamrokuk(甘路國) than so far presumed Gosoonsikuk(古淳是國). The formative times of Gamrokuk is dated to third centry B.C. It was a small state including about eight towns and its capital town probably corresponded to Geochang town of this time around Yeongchun(瀯川) hydrosphere. A cluster of Gaebong old tombs, one of clusters of Kaya old tombs, is situated at this area. It seems that another small country located in Kajo basin had been incorporated into Gamrokuk sometime between late third century and early forth century.
Gamrokuk had been brought up and developed to become a state of Kaya states, and Its name was Geoyeolkuk Geoyeol found at materials related to Kayagumgok(加耶琴曲) of Wooruk(于勒) in Samkuksaki undoub-tedly refers to Geoyeolkuk. Thus the relations it and Karakuk(加羅國) located at Koryeong region of this time is of great interest to me. In this study, Geoyeolkuk is considered to be a independent state, not to be a state subordinated to Karakuk, unlike other studies. Jatan(子呑) and Jatakuk(子他國) found at Ilbonseoki, also, are considered to be country names which pointed to Geochang region. From this viewpoint, the inquiry of related materials shows that Jatakuk was a independent country of Kaya seeking for independent self-existence. A example of this effort was that Jatakuk had take part in the international conferences for restau-ration of Kaya in 541 and 544 A.D. As for the collapse time of Geo-yeolkuk, it can be said that it had been collapsed around 562 A.D. accor-ding to the record of Ilbondseoki.
