In this paper, I supplied ourselves with a new reading of Seogyeong-byeolgok(西京別曲), one of the poetry-songs in the period of Goryeo(高麗) Dynasty. Reading this text, I considered not only the lingual text but also its extra-text containing, for example, some language usages and historical events related with its words.
So I could read the lingual text as follows;
Even if Seogyeong(西京) is our capital,
The second of the new-built Capital,
Rather than I do leave my lover, because he, casting aside his weaving hemp cloth, dose love me (or another our host),
I will follow him in spite of crying and crying
Even if a gems-chained necklace dropped to a rock,
Would its chain be cut off?
Even if, for a millenium, you (or they) lived alone
Would our(or their) faith to you be broken off?
Knowing the river Daedong(大同) is very wide,
Why did you put your boat on the river, boatman?
Knowing unsuitable to your extent,
Why did you take yourself (or your hostess) to the boat, boatman?
The flower at the opposite side of the river will I break,
As long as taking a ride in a boat and crossing over the river.
The theme of Seogyeong-byeolgok is not a separation of a lover's, nevertheless many researchers have thought so, but the separation of people from the Capital of Goryeo Dynasty in which they have lived as representatives of their home, which boundary limit lay from north of the river Daedong to south of the river Amnok(鴨綠). The reasons of their separation were related to two historical events; the invasion of Mogol Empire(A.D.1234) and the betray of Lim, Yeon(林衍) who dethroned the king Wonjong(元宗) and enthroned Wang, Chang(王?), a younger brother of the king, for the purpose of taking the power hegemony of the Dynasty(A.D.1269). The former brought out transfer of the Capital. It meant her standing against Mongol(蒙古) Empire and their suffering from everlasting war so they decided to separate themselves and their home from the Dynasty. The later, also, meant it.
While the first and second stanza of Seogyeong-byeolgok was created at the former, the last one was created at the later. The text of Seogyeong-byeolgok with musical refrains, I think, would be made in 1290's not for rule of power but for one of civil administrations, song-and-music. At that time, about, the province which were separated from Goryeo Dynasty at the two events, was re-united to her.
I read the text very newly and I afraid to assert that the reading is right absolutely for lack of some evident data which would make my reading turned out to be truth. But it may be allowed for me to insist the text could be read clearly and explicitly by my own way of reading. In conclusion, according to my reading the text of Seogyeong-byeolgok have implied tragic destine of people who had lived in the North Province(北界) which lay north of the river Daedong and was reigned by Seogyeong(西京), the second capital of Goryeo Dynasty and who repeated parting from and coming back after transferring the holistic capital from Gaekyeong(開京) to Kanghwa(江華). In that point, even though each voice of three stanza do not agree with each other and each creating time is not same, three stanza are related to each other.
