In this research, a Pungsu topographical analysis of the Koryo dynasty's Seogyeong capital region will be attempted. Related historical texts, ancient maps and pictures, current days' geographical data and prior researches will all be consulted.
The researcher's examination was concentrated upon the subject of 'Merit of Water(the Virtue in such Quality)', which was often cited in historical texts as the most prominent advantage of the Seogyeong region's geographical position. Such perception also triggered a series of attempts at moving the Main capital to this area. Considering the supposedly distinct characteristics of the Seogyeong region, it would have only been natural that the region had some potential influences upon the political system and the power structure of the Koryo dynasty. This matter should be addressed, and will be dealt with in the conclusion of this article.
In the opening of this article, the Pungsu topographical position of the Seogyeong region is examined, in terms of the Jusae(主勢/Main Posture), Guksae(局勢/Partial Posture) and Susae(水勢/Posture of the Waterways) factors. According to an extensive examination, it seems that the flow of the so-called Rae-Yong Maek(來龍脈) is merely constituting the tail section of the Cheongnam Jeong-Maek (靑南正脈), so it would be a presumptuous act to deem its importance overly grave. We can see that such comments referring to the Seogyeong area as having been the Source of the Korean peninsula's main skeletal spine(地脈), which have frequently appeared in historical texts, are rather lacking any considerable basis.
In the meantime, the Partial posture and posture of the Waterways, seem to have been deeply related to each other. The Partial posture of the Seogyeong region was very weak, as the waterways were not fully encompassing the area. As a result, the Cheongryong(靑龍) factor seems to have been stuck in an alienated status. And the Baekho(白虎) factor, with the exception of the Inner-Baekho(內白虎) , was not sufficiently engulfed either. The waterways were almost flowing outward, and the Ansan(案山) and Josan(朝山) mountains were also sitting in a position of turning their back on the area.
Yet the Seogyeong region was being mentioned as an area where the Merit of Water was indeed significant and the water flows were noticeably fluent. Moreover, one of the most significant comments in that regard were coming from the founder of the Koryo dynasty, King Taejo himself.
Determining the truthfulness in King Taejo's comments, is crucial in determining the relationship between the Pungsu topographical theories(風水地理說) and the politics at the time. According to the results of this researcher's examination, King Taejo's comments seem to have been referring to the relative closeness of the Daedong-gang(大同江) and Botong-gang(普通江) rivers to the area. It is rather certain that, what he was referring to could not have been any distinctive advantages in Pungsu topographical terms, because such advantages do not exist. The frequently quoted theory of 'the Boat-sailing figure'(行舟形說) of the Seogyeong area was also devised because of the problems detected in the water flows of the Pyeongyang(平壤) area in the first place.
So it becomes clear that King Taejo was merely emphasizing the Seogyeong area's meritorious advantages out of his own political intentions and agenda. Facts like this may already be well-known ones thanks to the prior researches, but proving the authenticity of such view was a task somewhat lacking in previous studies. Methodologies designed to deliver proofs based on such topographical analyses in determining the nature(including causes and results) of certain political events would profoundly benefit the researchers' future studies. This researcher certainly hopes so, and will engage in following studies with such approach.
