This study is to examine articles on Korea in The Oriental Economist(『東洋經 濟新報』) of Japan. The examined period is form 1896 to 1905. This journal supported a imperialistic foreign policy to stand for free trade in favor of the Japanese bourgeoisie.
This paper examined mainly the trend of Japanese public opinion of policies toward korea which were described in editorial articles, leading articles， and articles on visit. When Japanese imperialism made Korea a protected state, The Oriental Economist proposed a various colonial policies, such as the open-door policy， the principle of equality, and the conversion of Korean to Japanese, on the basis of liberalism. The purposes of a colonial policy were the solution of overpopulation, the extension of a market, and the exploitation of Korean resources. Japanese imperialism advanced into a continent in order to accomplish these purposes and this journal followed Japan's imperialistic policy. Although it expressed its sympathy for Korean to resist Japan's imperialistic policy in some articles, it regarded Korean as the object of suppression.
The editing principle of The Oriental Economist gained the very summit of a radical liberalism in the period of Taisho Democracy. In this period, the journal suggested the liberation of the suppressed people in opposition to Imperialism.
