This paper is principally concerned with the Japanese inhabitants in Busan during the Japanese colonial period by examining their experiences and memories at that time by means of a field study and data research. The Busan area shows a general aspect of the colonial situation but also several distinct characteristics in comparison with the rest of the Korean Peninsula oppressed by Japanese imperialism. In other words, the special circumstances of Busan area made the Japanese culture and society very unique as follows
First, the Japanese invaders built their own Little Japan in Busan. Especially, those who lived in the central distinct recalled that they had very special self-concluding or abnormal lifestyle. That is to say, the Japanese from the Japan islands created peculiar Japanese culture in Busan through complex culture or acculturation. However, the problem is that these Japanese constituents of Little Japan(Kyushu-based unified culture) could not help suffering reverse-culture shock after returning national sovereignty to Korea for reasons of failing to adapt themselves into the inland regional unified culture. So, they did not have any choice except living not as the Japanese but the Busan residents
Second, Chosun was interrelated with Japan in a different way between in and on the outskirts of Busan More specifically, it is evident that they frequently interchanged with each other m daily life although the Japanese were superior to the people of the Chosun dynasty in principle.
Third, most of the Japanese who inhabited the whole colonial territory as well as Busan did not know their lifetime spent in Busan was the most opulent and happiest until they went back to Japan when the Japan emperor surrendered to the Allied Forces.
Fourth, the Japanese m this 21st century cope with the tragic and dishonorable history of the past between Korea and Japan as the following four types: 1) the imperial nostalgic who yearn for the past glory during Japan Imperial Period, 2) the confessionary who repent their sins and apologize to all victims who suffered from their brutality, 3) the cliche who insist Japan lead the uncivilized Korea before the Japanese rule to be industrialized and modernized, and 4) the oblivious who forget everything we must never lose in mind to do good for good's sake although the past experiences could be incompatible with the current situation(such as Korea-Japan nongovernmental interchange, etc).
Finally, almost all the Japanese who have ever been in Busan underwent economic hardship after returning to their country. Rather, their realistic difficulties like this triggered them to consider Busan their hometown in their memories.
