There are record about the Gayageum(Korean 12-Stringed Zither) in the Samguksagi(三國史記). But I can't know when the instrument was made, and who have made it. These days, however, archeological excavation find out the old stringed instruments, and many folk songs have recorded in the area of the old Gayai(伽倻). So I have studed the origin of the zither of old Gaya and the music composed by Woo-Reok(于勒).
From this study I concluded that many shapes zithers had existed in the Samhan(三韓). And the King of the Great Gaya, Gasil(嘉實王) had improved the instrument considerring the Jeong(箏 Chines 13 stringed Zither), and odered to make the music for that instrument to Woo-Reok(于勒). Woo-Reck have composed 12 songs for the zither. A.D. 551 Woo-Reok have introduced to Silla(新羅), the Gayageum, and later tha Silla have introduced the instrument to the Japan.
The 12 songs is Hagarado(下加羅都), Sanggarado(上加羅都), Bogi(寶伎), Dalgi(達己), Samul(思勿), Mulgye(勿慧), Hagimul(下奇物), Sanggimul(上奇物), Sajagi(獅子伎), Geoyeul(居烈), Sapalgye(沙八兮), Isa(爾赦), and it shoes the name of the place, the old Gaya. So I'll supposed that these musics also show me the musical characters of that area now folk songs, and I have classified the 12 musics of Woo-Reok. The first, the music of Hagimul(下奇物) Sanggimul(上奇物) Geoyeul(居烈), Sapalgye(沙八兮) Isa(爾赦) Sanggarado(上加羅都) is the musics of north west of Geungsangnamdo(慶尙南都), and the second, Dalgi(達己) Samul(思勿) Mulgye(勿慧) are the musics of south west of this province, and others. I think this three groups show the musical characters of each areas.
