Beginning with a criticism of a current discourse on the productivity of older people fallsshort of enough consideration about our social reality and individual situations, this study examines the response and consequence seen in the Life-World of older people as Korea starts to hold a productive aging as a central value. This paper looks into the reality of productive aging in Korea by analyzing the Life-World of older people through the measurement of in-depth interview.
Although the older people are participating in the same area of activities, they can be differentiated by their personal situations, and this difference becomes remarkable in the evaluation about their life satisfaction. In other words, there is a very different dimension in older people behind their productive activities that look identical superficially. such activities as house chores and childcare which have been believed to be socially meaningful but older people surveyed rated them as not meaningful. According to my finding, this disparity is attributed to a fact that previous social values are still affecting the evaluation of older people's actual activity although productive aging is under discussion in order to redefine senescence in aging society along with positive roles of older people as members of our society. This suggests that new value assessments of senior activities should be made primarily in order to proceed with more discussions about productive aging and further a broadened definition of old age.

지금까지의 생산적 노년 이론은 노인들을 매우 동질적으로 보고 노인들의 현재 조건과 위치에 관계없이 모든 노인이 생산적 노년을 추구하기 위해 동일한 출발선상에 있는 것으로 간주한다. 그러나 이 연구에서는, 노인들이 다양한 사회적 요소들로 인해서 매우 차별적인 고령화 과정, 경험을 거쳐 상이한 노년기의 결과를 보일 것으로 예상하고 생산적 활동에 참여하는 노인들을 심층면접하고 이들의 경험적 사례들을 해석했다. 이것은 노인특성과 영향 요인들이 노인의 생산적 활동과의 상호작용하며 노년의 정체성을 형성하고, 생산적 노년의 적응에 어떻게 연관되는가를 살펴보는 작업이었다. 연구 결과, 면접 노인들은 처한 상황에 따라 생산적 활동의 참여가 차별적으로 결정되는 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 참여 상황의 이질성과 복합성으로 노년기 생활만족도가 더욱 강화되어 격차를 드러냈다. 본 연구의 결과 두 가지 점에서 기존의 생산적 노년 연구를 비판한다. 첫 번째는 서구에서 활동이론을 바탕으로 시작된 생산적 노년 논의가 긍정적인 측면에의 지나친 기대로 내부에 존재하는 다양성과 차별성을 간과할 수 있다는 점이다. 두 번째는 생산적 노년 논의가 노인집단의 생산성에 대한 적극적인 의미부여와 노인집단을 의존적 존재가 아닌 사회구성원으로 통합하려는 의도에서 비롯됨에도 불구하고 분석결과, 노인의 구체적 상황에 따라 생산적 노년으로서의 의미구성에서 차이를 보였다. 이 점은 노년기 생산성 논의가 실질적으로 노년기에 대한 확대된 의미규정을 이루기 위해서, 노인의 생산적 활동이 구성되는 맥락적 위치와 활동에 대한 사회적 평가의 간극에 관심을 기울여야 함을 시사한다.
