The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the research on restaurant tipping. Specifically, theoretical backgrounds, issues, and findings of the previous studies are discussed as an attempt to present a more clarified picture of the restaurant tipping research. Since the research has been conducted from various angles, both theoretical backgrounds and findings of the research still remain obscure and complex matter. However, few researches were conducted to fully present the streams of tipping theories. This paper has attempted to systematize the theories and findings the previous studies have employed in order to have the future research be on the right track. For this purpose, the previous studies were classified into three categories. The connection between or among the research perspectives was identified. The controversial issues, such as the tip ?service relation, and the choice between tip and service charge were also discussed. Finally, the suggestion as to the promotion of tipping custom in Korea was offered.
