The purpose of this article is to study the beginning and the form of ‘中’ on Ancient Korean under the loan-word transcription system of Korean.
‘中’ as a reception of Chinese Character has been treated that its sound and fuction are same on the Hyangchal(鄕札), Kugyol(口訣) and Idu(吏讀). Usually, ‘中’ has considered as the adverbial case markerswhich is the morpheme from a noun.
Especially, it is very difficult to discuss whether ‘中’ is the Korean reading of a Chinese character or the reading Chinese character by their traditional Chinese pronunciation.
Meanwhile, ‘中’ is the Chinese Character for the adverbial casemarkers and all case markers are the reading Chinese character by their traditional Chinese pronunciation under the loan-word transcriptionsystem of Korean.In order to discuss this, we criticize the precedingresearch for the sound of ‘中’ in the Hyangchal(鄕札), Kugyol(口訣) and Idu(吏讀), and we inquire into the sounds of ‘中’ in the Ancient Chinese, we assurance that the sound of ‘中’ in the Ancient Korean is not[dyung], [hui], [ui] but [*gyung, *guing], [gui].
Therefore, we show the possibility that ‘中’ is not the Korean reading of a Chinese character but the reading Chinese character by their traditional Chinese pronunciation. Also, the fact that ‘中’ is the reading Chinese character by their traditional Chinese pronunciation shows usthat ‘中’ is not from noun but is just case marker with the reading Chinese character by their traditional Chinese pronunciation under theloan-word transcription system of Korean.
