The main purpose of this study is to examine the religious aspect of Fyodor Dostoevsky, about which we have some misunderstanding, as we pay much attention. This study will show and examine why Dostoevsky should be regarded that his portrayal of major religious characters are improper, and criticized that he gave himself to heresy. In this respect, the character of Elder Zosima, who represents Dostoevsky's main religious idea in 《The Brothers Karamazov》, is analyzed, and the meaning of the Russian Orthodoxy is studied, following the author's guideline.
In 《The Brothers Karamazov》 Dostoevsky sets Elder Zosima against Elder Ferapont, who becomes a symbol of monotheism and patriarchy of the Russian Orthodoxy. Dostoevsky expresses his charity of 'mother-earth' through the Elder Zosima's view of panentheism and 'mother-church'. Satisfaction for the feminine and the earth, suffered persecution under the dominance of patriarchy, is consciousness which Dostoevsky clarifies his position that the Orthodoxy returns to life again as 'new church', only under the condition of giving up its respect for miracle and authority as well as its ritual on the segregation of the Heaven and the Earth.
