The establishment of the king’s name of Goguryo(高句麗)’s founder as Dong Myung(東明)is estimated to be first half of the 6th century. The name of Goguryo’s founder was recorded as Chu Mo (鄒牟) in the inscription on a stone monument in the fifth century, and here, Chu Mo is indicated as a son of the king of heaven.
The collapse of Buyeo in 494 seemed to be a critical occasion for the name of Goguryo founder’s name to change from Chu Mo(Ju Mong:朱蒙) to Dong Myung. During those days, Goguryo was implementing its own posthumous name system(諡號制)and tried to manifest the Buyeo(扶餘) succeeding awareness internally and externally. Those days was when political conflict was surfaced since the movement of capital by King Jangsoo(長壽王), and it was necessary to unify ideology to get Buyeo’s displaced persons into Goguryo’s ruling system.
According to Samguksaki(三國史記), Jumong(朱蒙) was buried in Yongsan(龍山, mountain of Dragon) after death, it was before an ideology saying the Royal house was identified with heavenly descendants. On this assumption, we can infer that the name Yongsan derived from legend of Jumong, founding history of Goguryo was called by the next generation. Then according to a record written at 15th year (506) of King Munjamyong(文咨明王), an article is found that the King enjoyed field hunting in southern part of Yongsan. Though Yongsan here is not different with present location, it assumed that the site might some relation with Yongsan, a founder's grave in Jolbon(卒本). That is to say Yongsan was the name related to Goguryo’s founder and King Munjamyong went to Yongsan for hunting in 506, right after Buyeo's collapse. That is just the time that Jumong renamed as 'Dong Myung'.
