This paper examines Korea's reception of Russian literature, its influence on Korean literature, and its resulting problems. It also engages in a comparative study between Russian and Korean literature.
Russian literature has had significant impacts on the formation of the modern Korean literature. However, the history of Russian literature in Korea has been misrepresented or distorted due to political situations in Korea such as the Japanese colonialism, the anti-Soviet movement, and anti-Communism. In addition, there have been many retranslations, mis-translations, and broad translations of Russian literature. Accordingly, as an effort to provide clear evidence of improper re-translation existing in Russian literature in Korea, this paper engages in my direct translation of Turgenev's A Beggar, compares its translation to those of Uk Kim, Bin Na, Jintae Son in the 1910-1920s, and investigates the problems of retranslations, mis-translations, and broad translations.
Through a comparative analysis of the intertextuality between A Beggar and Turgenev's Hill, this paper examined in an in-depth manner how Dongju Yoon accomplished literary and creative reproduction of Turgenev's work through the five transformations and reversals in its content and also created rather a lyrical world of poetics full of shyness. In short, even though Turgenev's A Beggar is an example of restrictive and optional reception of Russian literature in Korea, Dongju Yoon successfully overcame such limitations and reproduced Turgenev's Hill in his own creative and subjective ways.
