As is well known, the nineteenth-century Russian writer Ivan Turgenev went through a wide variety of literary world, including realist novels, plays, short stories with the theme of fruitless love, even fantastic features, the last of which are little researched both in Russian and Korean scholarship on Russian literature. Thus the primary purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the fantastic in Turgenev's literature, paying a special attention to one of his short stories, Phantoms. It is fascinating, to some extent, that Phantoms invites various different interpretations, in the sense that the story is structured by complex points of narration, subtle techniques of description. Given the fact that Turgenev himself had been criticized from the conservative for not taking stand of liberal and contemporary issues such as scientific viewpoints about hero, theme, social discourses, his attempts at different genre of the fantastic with its completely new plot and storylines should be scrutinized from a different perspective. This is another reason why this article demonstrates specific modes and narrative techniques embedded throughout this short story.
