The study explores semantic and pragmatic functions of Russian reciprocal marker (RCM) SJA, which is a verbal postfix originating from clitic reflexive pronoun in accusative case. Previous studies have not paid due attention to the semantic, pragmatic functions and treated this as a mere quantitative extension or derivation of proper reflexive meaning with no distinctive semantics or pragmatics. This study shows that RCM SJA forms lexically closed set and is mostly derived from verbs denoting naturally or necessarily reciprocal events, such as socially friendly or ritual, hostile or competitive events, intercommunication, physically reciprocal actions, etc. In addition, RCM SJA can denote metaphoric or metonymic meaning in the derivation process. The semantics of RCM SJA ranges over collectivity as well as reciprocity, the common denominator of which is part-whole relationship, or set-evoking entailment due to undistinguishable participants, roles, and subevents. In addition, the collective event SJA marks implicates centrifugal or centripetal motions. This collectivity can be also construed as the fundamental semantic connector deriving reciprocal reading from the initial reflexive from.
Further, this study argues the main pragmatic distinction between RCM SJA and other SJA functions consists in distinctive viewpoints: reciprocal SJA marks external viewpoint, whereas other SJA marks internal viewpoint with speaker's empathetic involvement in the speaker's action or state. This external viewpoint of RCM SJA is correlated with the lack distinguishability of plural subjects of the SJA verbs, as well as conventional or ritual events qualifying types of relationship. This external viewpoint of SJA construction can be adjusted by relative word order between main initiating agent and adjunctive comitative phrase or that of coordinated subject conjuncts. Further, RCM SJA encodes ritual or typical events lacking individuation and definiteness in the speaker's cognition and memory, whereas reciprocal reflexive pronoun drug druga encodes events salient in the speaker's mind for high individuation, definiteness or uniqueness. Thus this study shows that iconic and economic coding principles operate in the speaker's discourse-strategic choice between the two seemingly synonymous RCM and the reciprocal reflexive pronoun.
