The semantics of SJA in Russian has been a popular topic with the meaning of Russian prefixes. The SJA and prefixes cause changes in lexical meanings of verbs as well as grammatical shifts. Changes with prefixed SJA verbs semantically seem chaotic, but if SJA is considered as an expression related to the focus on the action of the verb, the meaning of the prefixed SJA verbs becomes much more intelligible. ?vedova et al. (1982: 385-90) has a list of prefixed SJA verbs and the analysis based on the data from the ?vedova's list and Russian National Corpus approves that the semantic function of SJA is focus on action, not a marker of intransitivity. The focus on action as a prototype of SJA is expressed variously in sentences with prefixed SJA verbs as a focus on the consequence of the action or as an action with elevated intensity. Along with the meaning of SJA, prefixes also alter the meaning of the verbs to which prefixes are attached. Schupbach classifies this change into two types - D(isplacement) and Q(uantification). The D means change of a location and the Q signals change in the intensity of performance. The distinction between D and Q is not always obvious. The D meaning is often related to the Q meaning through metaphor. These semantic factors - SJA as a focus marker and prefix as a marker of D or Q - affect the whole meaning of a prefixed SJA verb. Verification of the prefixed SJA verbs in ?vedova et al. shows possibility that the initial assertion can be extended not only to the prefixed SJA verbs, but also to all the SJA verbs in Russian. The purpose of this paper is to describe coherent functions of SJA and prefixes in prefixed SJA verbs and to make a theoretical argument for suggesting a semantic prototype of SJA, "focus on action" in a situation.
