Having become accustomed to a long period of peace, the Edo citizens were still unaware of any sense of danger regarding the oncoming hardships. Instead, their interest was focused on the slaughter of Kira Kozukenosuke Yoshinaka by Asano Takuminocami Naganori in the Pine Corridor of Edo Castle in 1701 (Genrokul4). This shocking event led to the minister committing harakiri. the Ako-Roshi (47 samurai) attacking Kira's residence, and the 47 samurai committing harakiri. It turned out to be the greatest "revenge" case in the history of Japan. Chushingura is the title given to the fiction based on this series of events known as the "Aka Case". This title began to be used in general from the first performance of "Kanadehon Chushingura'', a ningyo-joruri (puppet theater play) by Takeda Izumo when the puppet theater was at the height of fashion in Osaka in 1748. It eventually became one of the most popular works in kabuki, a sure crowd-pleaser. Truth and falsehood were mixed to result in a glamorous and grand synopsis. Over the years, Chushingura underwent fermentation and embellishment. People came to believe that it had actually taken place in reality and the drama excited the populace. It spread further to media such as kodan. rokyoku, and film. This drama, which originated in Osaka, reflected the image of the samurai as seen by the chonin (trading class) and was an expression of sympathy and support towards the people who were bound by the yoke of justice and charity, loyalty and duty. Chushingura is finished, when the loyal retainers achieved the revenge. But Tokugawa shogunate government ordered them to do the ritual suicide. At the result, they all were killed. I think lord-less retainers had no method to live except thinking how to die. This is how Chushingura became so outstandingly popular. Nevertheless, Chushingura itself was the vogue and not the Aka samurai. The truth of this national drama is buried in mundane historical events and remains wrapped in various mysteries. The ins and outs of the shocking event, which tack place in an era of grandeur, and the human relationship involved stirred the imagination of different people in different eras. It remains the eternal best-seller, dear to the heart of every Japanese and guarantees a box-office success whenever performed, however severe a recession there may be.
