This paper was intended to investigate the developmental process of college composition education with a focus on the textbook. Seeing that the composition textbook is the educational material reflecting the objective and content of education, teaching-learning method and the principle of assessment, the development of teaching materials can be seen to include the development of composition education. This paper attempted to discuss the changes in college composition education with a focus on the view of composition found in the teaching materials. They are summarized as follows:
First, the undivided period of college composition(From the independence of Korea to the 1960s) : The composition education of college in this period was treated as one domain of the department of Korean language and constituted the ‘literary view of writing’ and the ‘refined and high-toned view of writing’ formed since the period of occupation over Korea by imperialist Japan.
Second, the period of Korean language as liberal arts(From the 1970s to the 1990s) : There was an air of self-reflection on the curriculum of the department of college Korean language in the 1970s. In this stream, there occurred a possibility of switching to composition education treated with ‘expression and comprehension’. In the 1980s, this stream emerged as an attempt to integrate composition in the overall relationship of linguistic education.
Third, the period of independence of the composition subject(since the 2000s) : There has been the reinforced tendency for the composition education of college to become oriented towards an independent subject since the 2000s. This is seen to have been greatly influenced by the pedagogy of the Korean language, especially the pedagogy of composition and to be closely related to the movement of reorganization of liberal arts. In this stream, the teaching materials of composition show a tendency to become specialized and subdivided.
Fourth, it was made clear that a new direction of college composition education is related to the development of the composition curriculum, the selection of objectives and contents of composition education, the development of teaching-learning method appropriate to the composition subject, the principle of assessment and the like.
