It is my purpose to study on the political life in the late Roman Republic through legislative and electoral assemblies (comitia). For many years, scholars believed that the senate possessed the lion's share of political power and the people was left largely to do its bidding in the period. In recent years, some historians have come to question this view, focusing specially on the Roman people's ability to effect change through its own political institutions.
They have argued that there had always been constant tension between the respective interests of the Optimates and the Populares in the Roman politics of late Republic. These two sorts of politician struggled for their political program and election to office through the popular assemblies, the people striving to reflect its own will on the government.
The Roman politicians regarded as important political factors issues and ideology as well as their ability to persuade their citizens. Thus, I think, the political power during the late Roman Republic balanced with the auctoritas of th senate on one side and the sovereignty of the people on the other.
