This study aimed at the analyzation of the structure and symbols of the court rituals in 15th Century Joseon. The effort for establishing the system of court rituals had continued since the founding of the dynasty. The publishing of Gyeongguk-daejeon(National Great Codes) and Gukjo-orye-ui(Standard Rites for State Five Rituals) had come the end of the first stage for this effort. This study scrutinized the several core rites for court rituals from dynasty founding era to the time of publication of the two books.
The several facts came to light through this study. The 13rd year of King Sejong was watershed in establishing the rites for court rituals of Joseon. Before that time all officer attendants in advance entered the court yard and located in the reserved place waiting for King's entrance. Then king entered and ascended the king's chair and then all attendants made four low bows and other manners. It was changed like that the 3rd or lower officers located the reserved place, the king entered and went to his chair, and finally the 2nd or upper officers entered. This change implied the Confucian idea that king was the center of the world like the North Star in the space. All attendants had to gather the court yard and salute the king symbolizing the center of the world. In principle all officers had to enter the court yard after the king's entering and ascending his chair. It was too troublesome compared with the Jeseon court's rites before reforming.
The pattern way that the 2nd or upper officers only entered, king looking at, while the 3rd or lower being located beforehand was the compromise plan originated from Tang Chinese rites. And it showed well that the 2nd or upper officers were the special position in Joseon bureaucracy. So the reformed rite in the 13rd year of king Sejong included the meaning that king was the center of Joseon and the 2nd or upper officers were special status in Joseon dynasty.
This study concluded that the rites for the court rituals in Gyeongguk-daejeon and Gukjo-orye-ui were the result from 100 years' long efforts since founding dynasty and these included the idea originated for Chinese Confucian model that king was the center of the world and in the same time it showed well the high officials' special status proper to Joseon Dynasty.
