Kim Dong Ri is a distinguished writer for his ideological pursuit in literature. He has deep interest in religions. So many of his works are covered with every Korean religion such as shamanism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Christianity.
This thesis adopted his representative short stories「Mu nyo do」 (=A Sorceress' Portrait), 「Mary ui hwae tae」(=Mary's pregnancy),「Mok gong Joseph」(=A woodworker Joseph), 「Saban eui sib ja ga」 (=Saban's Cross) , 「Bu Hwal」 (=Resurrection) as the search object.
In 「Mu nyo do」, Dong Ri reveals the sharp confrontation of Christianity with folk shamanism through mother and son's blood ties. He introduced the deepest and mysterious spiritual world of human existence. In this work, Mo Hwa's death shows two aspects. Firstly, a tragic death which results from collision with Christianity and Shamanism. Secondly, a harmonized death which is assimilated with nature. Dong Ri accepted the view of the spirit and the world of Christianity and shamanism. He apprehended human's deep inner world and succeeded in achieving reconciliation based on familism.
In 「Mary ui hwae tae」, the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary is described as not the power of holy spirit, but the super natural phenomenon. Also in 「Mok gong Joseph」, Dong Ri stares Jesus as the eye of his father Joseph‘s realistic sight. Joseph worried that his son is not common, and Mary tried to reconcile them as a negotiator. These works reflect social consciousness of that times.
In 「Sa ban eui sib ja ga」, Dong Ri deals with salvation problem. Saban proposed that he can save the Jews by defeating Rome's army. But Jesus claimed that they only can be blessed by pursuing peace on heaven, not on the land. In this work Christianity is presented as thoroughly transcendental and paradisiacal thought cutting historical reality, because he intended to indicate the deformity of both extreme views of salvation and to unfold his new humanism. So it seems that he brought out a prejudice in his Christian acceptance.
Also in「Bu Hwal」, he comprehended resurrection as a result of a flash death, not in the context of Bible.
The aspects of the Christian acceptance on Dong Ri's works are to be summarized as follows. He grasped Christianity as confronting disposition between spirits, ideologies and spirit-body. And he accepted Christianity from the standpoint of problem consciousness.
Although Kim Dong Ri's novels showed negative aspects in the Christian acceptance, they pursued human origins with religious problem consciousness. And they were close at hand the spiritual world and salvation event which are the core of human life getting out of literary easygoing inclination and trivialism.
Conclusionally, Dong Ri doesn't recognize the death and resurrection of jesus, and he shows his acceptance of Christianity by comparing Spiritual Science and Shamanism.
