In this thesis I discuss about the literary method of conversion to Christianity based on the Enlightment novels, Monjo and Dajungdahan. These two novels prove us that the acceptance of Christianity in Korea cannot be defined only in terms of public modernity which relates to wealth and military power of the nation.
Manjo is the novel which demonstrates the conversion to Christianity is a private matter concerning the heroine's own repentance. Mrs. lung, the heroine of the novel, converted herself to Christianity not because she cared about wealth and military power of the nation but because she wanted to repent of her sin and get salvation. In other words the acceptance of Christianity in this novel was focused on the herione's priviate wish for admitting her sin and getting salvation.
Dajungdahan is the novel which suggests the alternative to the acceptance of Christianity in terms of public modernity. Mr. Samsung, the hero of the novel, converted himself to Christianity because he accepted his active role as an evangelist who engaged in social work and public welfare. This novel also characterized Mr. Samsung's conversion to Christianity as communal conversion of the political offenders who had been withdrawn and alienated from the society.
