The Korean christians understand that the 1907 Revival movement was an unique one, but from the middle of 18th century to 20th century, a remarkable revival movement had taken place in many parts of the world. That is why this period is described as the event of the century or annus mirabilis. From 1905 to 1907, in particular, a strong revival movement took place in Wales, U.K., in Azusa street in Los Angelis, U.S.A. and in Assam and Mukti in India. The 1907 Revival movement was held in this context. Therefore, it is of importance to understand the 1907 Revival movement from ecumenical perspective.
The ecumenical implications of the 1907 Revival movement needs to be understood not only from geographic perspecitve, but also from theological perspective. The 1907 movement as well as Revival movements which took place in other part of the world was organized by those who were involved with a strong ecumenical spirit. At the first place, a strong unity between Christians and the Holy Spirit was made. Secondly, unity among christians, particularly between leadership and lay people as well as missionaries and local leadership was made. In fact the courageous confession of sin by the leadership provoked waves of confession of sins from the congregation members and this public confession of sin led them to reach a full reconciliation. Therefore, the unity that was achieved in the 1907 movement was neither structural unity nor cooperative unity in carrying out a joint programme. It was a ideal unity which was achieved through both confession and reconciliation in spirit and in truth.
The Great Revival movement could be understood by ten unique characteristrics. First, the Great Revival movement was a Kairotic movement discerning the signs of the times. Second, it was a holistic repentance movement which was followed by ethical actions. Third, the leadership took a leadership in provoking waves of repentance and the confession of sin was made in public, not in private. Fourth, it was a holistic reconciliation and unity movement. Fifth, it was a movement by which the essences of faith were affirmed. Sixth, the 1907 Revival movement made a remarkable progress in influencing the worship and theology so as to take root in the Korean spirituality. Seventh, an indigenization of the Gospel was made. Eighth, it was an ecumenical movement in terms of motif, spirit and practice. Ninth, the renewal movement of the institutional church was made by non institutional challenges. Tenth, the Holy Spirit movement took place in high institutional church.
The Great Revival movement had a profound ecumenical implication for the direction of church witness today and tomorrow.
