Currently, the Korean church is in a period of neither revival nor growth, but rather in the process of recession. In this situation, many leaders and members of the church are praying for a new era of revival. But it is necessary to identify the true revival received from Sovereign God. The Korean church has experienced variety of revival phenomena, but she has never established a proper understanding of revival theology. Not only did Charles Finney’s revivalism dominate American evangelicalism in the 20th century, but it also affected the Korean church so much that biblical and Calvinist revival theology was not of interest.
So it is necessary to pay attention to Jonathan Edwards who was active in the period of first Great Awakening in the United States during 18th century and his writings. Edwards was a Calvinistic theologian and a leader who personally and collectively experienced the pouring of the Holy Spirit. He also left a number of writings on how we could discern between false and true revival.
In this paper I present Edwards’ historical backgrounds and an overview on his writings on revival (A Faithful Narrative, Distinguishing Marks, Religious Affections etc.) (2) and the overview of Some Thoughts concerning the Present Revival of Religion containing the essence of his viewpoint on revival (3). In that book, Edwards criticized both of the enthusiasm and opponents to revival that emerged during the First Great Awakening. On the other hand, he presented the characteristics of the true revival operated by the Holy Spirit, and gave advises on what one must do to promote true revival. Through these examinations, it will be beneficial to establish biblical and Calvinistic theology on revival.
