In 1688, Jung Sihan(1625-1707) traveled Palgong mountain area during three months. He was an active traveler and wrote the journal of his travel. His journal, named Sanjung Ilgi(山中日記) shows us the convention of traveling of local elites and diverse social and cultural aspects in the late Chosun period.
He traveled together with his grandson and servants. During his travel on Palgong mountain, he stayed in the several temples. He concentrated on reading repeatedly Confucian classics related Toegye(退溪)'s school, and had to care his grandson's health. He used his 8 slaves(nobi) as the messengers between him and his family, porters, guides to his destination. Also, Weigohnobi(外居奴婢)in Yongchun provided Jung Sihan with a large quantity of grains as their obligations. Buddhists monks and local elites nearby presented him with grains, fruits, medicine, papers and so on. The tribute from Weigohnobi and presents from local elites and monks added much to the expense of the Jung Sihan's journey. This means that his travel provide the chance to enhance his economical base and social network.
In addition, Jung Sihan observed the life of monks lived in Palgong mountain where was the most important Buddhist center of Yeongnam(嶺南) region. In his journal, there were a large number of temples and monks unidentified in other historical records. He described distinctive characters of monks and their daily life. Buddhism Scripture studies(敎學) based upon the ‘Curriculum(‘履歷課程’)' established in the 17th century were active practiced at that time. Besides in the journal, it is realized that Buddhist rituals were influenced by Confucian based rituals.
This study is an approach to understand social and cultural historical aspects of the late Chosun period through the traveling journals. I also wish to help the research of Buddhist history in the late Chosun period by this approach.
