In recent years, auto ownership is increasing rapidly. In parallel with this trend, the need for the invesment on subway being free from traffic congestion on roads is also increasing. To cope with this, all the large cities whose population exceeds one million have prepared or are preparing their master plans for subway developments.
The objective of the article is to present a number of guidelines for the subway network planning, that are drawn from the knowledge acquired in carrying out the Seoul subway planning project and its impact study on transportation systems. One main discussion item involes the planning process to develop the subway network structure. Another item is the engineering and performance standards that should be fulfilled in determining the network structure.
