Every nation has its own peculiar characteristics, and these make up the distinctive artistic color of the nation. This artistic color, again, is bound to have much to do with the nation's cultural traits, manifested more strongly when the nation or an individual members of the nation are undergoing a crisis of oppressive nature. This thesis aims to take a short view of a cultural peculiarity of China, focusing on Guan han qing's Jiu feng chen za ju, the best comedy, we can say, in 元 dynasty.
Jiu feng chen za ju is a play thoroughly charged with a comic atmosphere, with the marriage of an innocent kisaeng and a profligate young nobleman as the subject matter. Amid this atmosphere, however, the author applauds the heroism of the old veteran kisaeng Zhao pan er, and offers to present a satire of the promiscuous life and falsities of the upper classes.
The Chinese people have, since ancient times, respected 'zhong he 中和'(to be moderate in expressing one's own feelings) (Zhong yong『中庸』), and have emphasized, in art, a temperate beauty of 'le er bu yin 樂而不淫'(to be joyous but not obscene) (Lun yu, Ba yi 『論語ㆍ八佾』). It is for this reason that, deep under the humor of the Chinese classical comedies, there has always been a solemn and serious attitude. The theorists of later days value highly these plays of 'ku le xiang cuo 苦樂相錯'(sadness blending with joy)(Lu tian cheng呂天成 Qu pin 『曲品』), and 'yu ku yu xiao 寓哭於笑'(laughter permeated with sadness)(Li yu 李漁 Xian qing ou ji 『閑情偶寄』. Thus. 'le er bu yin 樂而不淫' can be said to constitute the cultural peculiarity of the Chinese people, with their optimism, composure and heroism.
