This essay discusses the phrases largely employed by Simaqian(司馬遷) in his Shiji(史記). First of all, the phrases are divided into 32 different categories and the theory or principle behind each group is explained with specific examples in detail.
The classification of phrases follows : xiongjian(雄建), yaxun(雅馴), yishen(意深), yanyu(諺語), duanju(短句), yongtan(詠歎), duizhang(對仗), yingchen(映?), hugao(呼告), cengdi(層遞), wangfu(往復), dingzhen(頂眞), tujie(突接), kuashi(誇飾), tiaotuo(跳脫), qupi(取譬), yongdian(用典), paibi(排比), chongfu(重複), diexu(疊敍), shixian(示現), daozhuang(倒裝), weici(微辭), cunzhen(存眞), quzhe(曲折), shuowen(設問), jieduan(節短), shengbi(省筆), ninglian(凝鍊), jieduan(截斷), mozhuang(摹狀), candai(參差).
Phraseology is an important part of rhetoric. Rhetoric is language used to persuade people and produce an impressive effect on readers. It not only helps readers clearly understand what the author tries to convey in his or her writing, but also makes readers agree with the author's point of view.
Simaqian eloquently made good use of phrases in expressing his thoughts and feelings. In fact, the present paper aims to understand the literary forms and conventions of phrases which will eventually help readers understand the ideas and contents of Shiji.
