Every woman in Sutong’s works has experienced tragedies. The reason for these tragedies can be the patriarchal society, the government system, or the traditional culture. However, we overlook how women also mistreat themselves. In many cases, women choose options that are not beneficial for them. For their whole life, they ignore the basic human rights they are entitled to and instead complain to the heaven above about their hopeless lives. We have come to think that feudalism and patriarchy oppress women and thereby cause tragedies to women, but societal system is not the only problem. This problem belongs to every human being, especially women themselves. This paper analyzes the 「A wife and Concubines」 and 「Hongfen」 to observe the subordination of women illustrated through the tragic lives of the women.
What the author shows in these works are not how women are troubled by the patriarchal culture and the resulting society and the ethics in response to that culture. Rather, the shows how women subconsciously behave when they are positioned in this type of culture. Sutong delves into how such long lasting culture has oppressed women, how women have developed unique psychological response to that culture and the cultural limits of the culture.
In 「A wife and Concubines」 Sutong creates a woman that survives in a fabricated historical background. Women compete to survive in a feudal family with polygamy; in this family, to retain the authority, women subject themselves to the male world represented by Chenzuoqian. What they ultimately aim to gain from a violent competition is a stable authority based on dependence to men. The author wanted to portray the subordination of women that is deeply rooted in society. Instead of attributing implied political or cultural meaning to these characters, Sutong focuses on women’s souls and honest impressions of humanity.
For 「Hongfen」 Sutong chose the reorganization of the prostitutes as the topic to describe women that borrow from men. After 5.4, many literary works chose love as the most powerful tool to argue against old culture and old conservatism. Consequently, revolution and love can help the people to escape from the old traditions. However, 「Hongfen」 overthrows the old traditions entirely. Even the political change and the ideological change cannot transform people’s lives if they are too rooted in the past. The government accepted ‘new man’ that experienced the reformation, but that could not change how people view the prostitutes and how women hand over their lives to men and fail to escape from the tragedies.
