This paper aims to consider the relationship between cultural phenomena and acts of violence of language, especially in regard to the Japanese language. Firstly, consideration will be given to the necessity of analyzing “nationality”, “Japaneseness” and “Japanese culture” in terms of the cultural, social and political features of present-day Japan. Secondly, the oppressive characteristics of “Asia” and “neo-Asianism” which have been restored amidst the globalizing trends of the day, will be clarified. Thirdly, I will consider “non-Asian phenomena in Japan” and “Asian phenomena in Japan”. In particular, I would like to shed light on the relationship between universalism and regionalism. Through these considerations, the fact that Japanese language and Japanese cultural phenomena have diverse functions in their historical and social contexts will be elucidated. I will first examine the negative meaning of “neo-Asianism” through a critique of cultural philosophy, and then focus my attention on the positive meaning of multiculturalism with the aim of considering the relationships between conditions of crosscultural studies and human conditions. Fourthly, efforts will be made to pursue a method of reconciliation between universalistic, essentialist statements and relativistic, constructivist statements. In conclusion, I will elaborate on a critique of language and critical functions based on a critique of cultural philosophy from a pluralistic standpoint.
