The main purpose of this study is to describe the theatrical appearance of Sandai-Narue (山臺 儺禮) and to examine the development-process of Sandai Nori(儺禮), a traditional masque play.
Narye(儺禮). that had been imported from China. handed down as double faced form of ritual and amusement. And then. in the Chos?n(朝鮮) dynasty, Nerye was devided into three events: Kuna(驅儺), Kwanna(觀儺), S?lla(設儺). Kuna was the ritual event that would expel disaster. Kwanna was the amusement event that would be performed for King and Royal family. S?lla was the celebration event for the procession of King and chinese envoy. These distinctive quality influenced on each performance repertoires.
When S?lla performed, Sandai(山臺), the makeshift stage would be constructed to make flourishy spectacle. Pongsado(奉使圖), the record picture of Chinese envoy, is the only visible evidence in which we can find the shape of Sandai and the repertoires of Sandai-Narye. According to Pongsado, Sandai was shaped like as a mountain, so decorated with the models of rock. tree. animal and temple. The actors would play many repertoires, that is. dance, song, drama and acrobatic feats, Especially Sandai Chapsang Nori(山臺 雜像 놀이), the puppet show was performed on Sandai. Most repertoires were performed on the ground in front of Sandai. In fact, Sandai would be a stage setting as well as stage itself.
S?lla was the celebration event of Court, but could also be enjoyed by public. In the inside, the public could be the main audience for S?lla and its repertoires. As the public interest growing, actor's skill and repertoires were improved. And the new plays like as Sandai Nod was created in this situation.
