What this research takes notice of in the understanding of missionaries from the American Missions Headquarters is the missionaries' roles and their opinions of modem civilization, and their understanding of Korea as the mission area. 'This is the reason why the problems of building up a frame of analysis 'so called a longing for westernization' pointed out the domestic causes in the introduction of Christianity, and why the missionaries' viewpoint of civilization is on the rise as an important point of view. As is generally known, for the missionaries had dual aspects of modern civilization, taking a serious view of rationalism. The missionaries were the group of people who had been criticized because they had a way of thinking of "religion" that ran counter to the principle of reason of modem civilization based on secularization in America. They therefore clarified their attitudes as anti-modernization in that they believed that the advent of modem secular society and various changes derived from the name of civilization had satanic roots that lead man to ruin.
However, as the missionaries left western civilized society and carne to the hermit kingdom, the old Korean Empire was regarded as uncivilized society; they were on a different footing in comparison with their recognition of modernity and civilization in Europe. That is, they discovered their position that served the missions as well as enlightening Korean people to choose the civilized way of life instead of giving up their uncivilized life style. The missionaries, on account of these reasons, showed us their obviously ambiguous and dual attitudes on their belief of civilization. They sometimes described Koreans as an uninfected innocent religious people running against modem civilization, and, from time to time, portrayed them as uncivilized ones isolated from modem civilization. These understandings of Koreans greatly differed from military servicemen or tradesmen who had worked in eastern countries and understood things with their own values. It is certainly realized that the missionaries' attitude of understanding had a more complicated cultural logic than the justification of imperial invasions which were prescribed by mere formulae, for instance, non-western society = uncivilized society = savagery.
Therefore, the research on such issues is to investigate the structure of "orientalism" which had been dominated by the westerners' way of thinking during the period of the late 19th century and the early 20th century, and to provide other viewpoints and methods in order to understand the cognitive attitude on modern civilization that began to establish itself in Korean society since the opening of ports in Korea.
Through the research on the missionaries of the American protestant churches, an analysis of the missionaries' thought on modem civilization and the understanding of Korea will provide important material in the understanding of the history of Korean protestant churches. Furthermore, the study will help to grasp the formation of the relationship between civilization and religion in non-western society, Korea being given modern civilization by western society. And this research is also to examine the missionaries' viewpoint of civilization and their understanding of Korea. So it will help to define the structure of western modernity and its limitations which have been accepted in the modernization of Korea.
