This paper, reviewing and analysing hand written materials in Hangeul published during the King Yeongjo, has two main purposes : the one is ascertaining some aspects of lexical distribution shown in them, and the other is establishing the chronology by which the lexical meanings had been changed.
As for the first purpose, the author has digged out and enumerated some 'conservative words' and 'rare words', and, based upon it, he elucidated their distinctions and concrete meanings. As for the second purpose, he has put much emphasis upon their meaning changes related to metaphorical meaning, expansion of applied range of meaning, and fluctuation of meaning value, and, finally searching for the process of changes of meaning.
There have been discovered not a few conservative words, including those not having reflected phonological changes, those having lost their given grammatical functions, and those never prevailing their vocabulary. For example, there are '뎌즈음긔, 새, 두립다'. In addition, there has been shown rare words which never show in another materials such as '말쌀, 말이, 술못, 이듬달'. The activated usage of synonyms is also its distinction as shown in the following pairs of synonym: '두립다/두려다', '본받다/법닫다/법하다', '어리다/졈다'. This aspect bears mute witness to the high ability of the translator's mastery over vocabulary and expressive power over sentences.
There have been shown lots of words with figurative meanings such as '깊다, 늦다, 맛, 져믈다', while there have a relatively few words, reflecting the shift of meaning value and the fluctuation of applied range of meaning such as '말삼' and '얼골'.
