This paper examines how well Korean EFL university students distinguish between high-frequency synonymous words in terms of their usage and meaning. Thirty-nine low intermediate Korean EFL university students took part in the study by taking a vocabulary test in which they were asked to choose the right word in a given context. Thirty-two high-frequency vocabulary served as the target words for this study. Thirty-two participants were interviewed to discover what made it difficult for them to find the right word in the test. The test results showed that the students’ knowledge about the usage and meaning of the target words was rather inadequate. Student interviews revealed that their insufficient knowledge was attributable to the followings: (1) careless way of consulting a dictionary (2) user-unfriendly thesauruses and (3) lack of teaching word usage. One implication for vocabulary learning is that the students need to be encouraged to use a resource, whether it be a thesaurus or a reference book, that promotes the proper use of synonymous words by pinpointing the exact differences between them.
