Often overshadowed by the history of the national liberation movement, the international history which developed into the defeat of Japanese imperialism and Korean liberation has not drawn adequate attention from the Korean academic community. This paper analyzes the Asia-Pacific War which was ahead of the Eura-Atlantic War in World War Ⅱ, and tries to bring into focus how this war contributed to the defeat of Japan and the liberation of Korea. During World War II in the Asia-Pacific, Korea was not recognized as a belligerent body, even though tile interim government of Korea had issued a declaration of War against Japan on 9 December 1941 just after the Japanese Pearl Harbor attack of 7 December 1941. Neither in the list of 26 signatory states of the Declaration of tile United Nations issued on 1 January 1942, nor in the list of its 21 additional adherents, was Korea included. This absence seems to have contributed to the non-invitation of Korea to the San Francisco Peace Conference of 1951. Even though Korea achieved its de jure liberation thanks to the San Francisco Peace Treaty which entered into force in 1952, short of the invitation of Korea as a victorious country to the San Francisco Peace Conference under the impact of the Cold War aggravated by the Korean War, the ending process of World War Ⅱ in the Asia-Pacific has bequeathed a negative legacy not only to Korea but also to the whole region As an example, the relations between North Korea and Japan have not yet normalized since the Asia-Pacific War.
