This article addresses the entrepreneurial activities of Park Jong-Sil, who was one of the most well-known modem traders and contributed toward the Korean marine transportation and the modem economy formation of Jeju by means of local capital rather than non-Jeju capital.
Firstly, Park Jong-Sil's economic activities for over 50 years were a important research data for Jeju's modern enterprises as well as its entrepreneurs. Secondly, Park opened his store, 'Park Jong-Sil Sangjeom', the first modern style company in Jeju. This company became an important driving force to the economic growth of Jeju under the rule of japanese Imperial ism and influenced other modern companies of Jeju and their expansion. Thirdly, Park established his marine transportation company for the first time in Korea by means of Jeju capital. And owing to his successful business at that time, many Jeju residents could go aborad easily, especially to japan Fourth, Park thought that credit was the most important business spirit in his business, and he lived frugally for his whole life based on a diligent and economized spirit. Fifth, Park accumulated his wealth with a modem company, and then he contributed his money to the local community and showed ethical business of social-oriented or community-based entrepreneurship.
In recent years, entrepreneurial ethics and social contribution activities has decreased gradually in Korea. And many entrepreneurs have been the objects of critical censure among the common people because of real estate speculation in non-normal ways within the liberal market economic system. In this condition, Park Jong-Sil's economic activities and spirit and academic studies will suggest some meaningful points to contemporary entrepreneurs.
