The purpose of this article is to analysis the editorial course and contents of Hongjae-ch?ns?, a collection of King Ch?ngjo’s prose and poetry.
King Ch?ngjo described himself as Gunsa(君師), which means a king and at the same time a mentor. He answered the description, for he bequeathed to us Hongjae-ch?ns?, the most voluminous book that any king have ever written in Korea or China.
Hongjae-ch?ns? was compiled and printed in Kyujanggak(奎章閣). In 1776, Ch?ngjo founded Kyujanggak, and it was endowed with a few functions. But the most important funtion of Kyujanggak is to compile the present king’s writing. So, Hongjae-ch?ns? was compiled several times before Ch?ngjo died in 1800. Until now, I found that Honejae-ch?ns? had been compiled totally four times in 1787, 1799, 1801 and 1814. Finally in 1814, Hongjae-ch?ns? was published by Ch?ngli-type print(整理字).
Now, Hongjae-ch?ns? was found eight versions in Kyujanggak and Changs?gak(藏書閣). Seven versions were made from in 1779 till in 1814, and the last was photoprinted by Taehaksa(太學社) in 1978.
Hongjae-ch?ns? falls into two sections. The former is the works made while Ch?ngjo were the Crown Prince, the latter is after Ch?ngjo mounted the throne. The latter is divided in two parts too, the one is poetry and prose, the other is books. Ch?ngjo wrote most of the books, but in some books, his lieges helped him write.
To the last days of his life. King Ch?ngjo continued applying himself in studies. he had reached a high level of learning. Hongjae-ch?ns? is the authentic records in which we can study Ch?ngjo’s knowledge and thought.
