This paper purports to research and analyze of the studies on the genre of Acts. Scholars usually take Luke as a historian, a theologian, or an author. Some critics, one of whom is H. J. Cadbury, take Luke as a historian. Other critics such as M. Debelius, E. Haenchen, and H. Conzelmann consider him as a theologian. Still others, especially after mid 1970s, intend to take him as an author. As long as Luke-Acts is one of the literary works, it cannot help being influenced by the genres of Greco-Roman literary works, which most of the recent studies on genre start at.
In this paper, the classification of genre conforms to that of Phillips’ “The Genre of Acts: Moving Toward a Consensus?” (Currents in Biblical Research, vol. 4.3, 2006) Analyzing the representative critics' works, this thesis classifies the genre of Acts as following. 1) biography (C.H. Talbert), 2) novel (R.I. Pervo), 3) epic (M.P. Bonz, D.R. MacDonald), 4) history: general history (D.E. Aune), political history (D.L. Balch), deuteronomistic history (T.L. Brodie), apologetic history (G.E. Sterling).
Through this research, two conclusions can be offered. First, the historicity of Acts can't be verified only through the studies on genre. Ancient history as it is, Acts is not related to truth value. It is only a truth claim document. Second, Acts is too complicate text to be defined as a sole genre. Writing Act, Luke imitated and creatively interpreted various kinds of Greco-roman literary works. If we don't try to fix the genre of Acts in only one category, these various studies on the genre of Acts will enable us to understand Luke's work more comprehensively and more appropriately.
